"What You Should Know"
Before adopting
Adopting a Friend

Thank you for considering  the Animal Adoption League to find a companion to become a part of your family.

Our adoption process consists of submitting an application, having veterinary and personal references checked, a phone screen with the adoption/application coordinator and a home visit. We strive to match up the right dog or cat with the right family because we want to make GREAT and permanent matches. This is why we feel it is so important to be thorough during the application process.

Our adoption fee varies depending on the animal. The fees help to cover the expenses the rescue incurs providing excellent vet care to all of the animals that come into our care. Our animals that are adopted out are up to date on all of his/her shots, spayed or neutered, heartworm negative, on heartworm preventative and temperament tested.

Since many of our animals come to us as strays or from owners who did not properly care for them, many (dogs) come to us heartworm positive. If this is the case, the dog will be listed here immediately so people can see him or her and inquire, but will be treated (by the safest and most effective treatment our veterinarian deems necessary) and, if necessary, allowed time to recover before being released to their forever home. We want every dog or cat to have a great start in his or her new life!

The application is the first step in this process so please answer all questions with as much detail as possible. If a question is not applicable to you then list N/A in the field.  Any missing information will only result in a delay in processing your application.

Please call your veterinarian and obtain permission from him to release information to our adoption coordinator.  Please ensure that your pet’s records are current and that all of your pets are in their system. Please list your current vet and your previous vet if you have seen them for less than 5 years.  If we are unable to confirm that your pets are (or were) current on vaccines, preventatives and spayed/neutered we will be unable to continue processing your application until that information is provided.

Even if you do not immediately see the pet you are looking for on our site, please continue going through the approval process.  We can keep your information on file for future use should you find the perfect companion later.

If we have an approved applicant for a certain animal, we can bring that animal into our foster program or put you in touch directly with the shelter or individual re-homing the animal.

Please be aware that this is not a quick process as we are all volunteers who work full time jobs and are very involved in the rescue community. We ask that you please be patient.  We want to assure that our companion animals are placed in appropriate homes and that they will truly be their forever homes!

If you are interested in fostering for The Animal Adoption League, the same process will be followed  as for adoption.  You must be approved and a home visit will be made.
Thank you in advance for wanting to become a part of the team and we look forward to working with you!

A volunteer will call the Vet to be sure that potential owners have properly cared for their pets in the past and that all current pets have been spayed or neutered and are up-to-date on vaccinations.
